The inventor of mathematics is unknown and debated. The earliest evidence of mathematical thought dates back to ancient Sumerians, who lived in modern day Iraq around 3500 BCE. He also developed the Archimedean screw, the compound pulley system and Archimedes’ principle which states that a floating object displaces an amount of liquid equal to its own weight. He died sometime between 212-212 BC during the Siege of Syracuse when he refused to leave his home city despite orders from his king to do so. His legacy lives on as he is considered one of the greatest mathematicians in history. He also has a crater located on the moon named after him.
